The Treegens app exists to prove that a tree was really planted. That proof is the data we collect - and almost nothing else.
Who we are
The app is operated by Treegens Regeneration Inc. ("Treegens", "we"). For anything in this policy, write to jimi@wemakeimpact.org. Under laws such as the GDPR we are the controller of the data described here.
What you give us
- Your account. Signing in creates or connects a wallet. Depending on how you sign in, that means your wallet address plus the email address or phone number you used. Your wallet address is public by nature.
- Planting submissions. The video you film, the GPS coordinates and place name captured at the time of filming, the number of trees, the tree type, and when it was recorded.
- Health checks. The same, for follow-up films of trees you planted earlier.
- Profile details you choose to add, such as a name and an avatar photo.
- Push notifications - only if you turn them on. That stores a subscription issued by your browser so we can send you the alert; you can revoke it in your browser or phone settings at any time.
Why we are allowed to hold it
- To give you the service you asked for - we cannot verify a planting or pay a reward without the video, the location and your wallet address.
- Because you agreed - camera, location and push notifications are each turned on by you, and you can withdraw any of them at any time in your device settings.
- Because we have a legitimate interest in keeping the rewards honest: detecting duplicate or falsified submissions, and keeping the service secure.
What stays on your phone
Videos waiting to upload are queued on your own device and sent when you have signal. Until they upload they exist only on your phone, and clearing the app's storage deletes them.
Who sees a submission
Submissions are reviewed by Treegens DAO verifiers, so your video, its location, and the wallet that submitted it are visible to them and to the Treegens team. Approved plantings - counts, locations, and the rewards paid for them - are recorded on a public blockchain and shown in the leaderboard and on our public sites. Blockchain records are permanent by design and cannot be deleted on request.
Third parties involved
- Thirdweb provides wallet sign-in, including the email and SMS one-time codes.
- Our hosting and backend providers store the uploaded videos and run the API. They keep standard server logs - IP address, request, time, browser user-agent - to keep the service running and secure.
- Map and geocoding services turn your coordinates into a place name.
These providers process the data on our instructions only. We do not run advertising trackers, we do not sell or share your personal information, and we do not use your videos for anything other than verifying plantings and showing the work publicly.
Where your data goes
Treegens plants across several countries and our providers run servers in the United States and Europe, so your data may be processed outside the country you live in. Where the law requires a safeguard for that transfer, we rely on our providers' standard contractual clauses.
How long we keep it
- Account and profile details - while your account exists, and then deleted on request.
- Submission videos and their locations - kept as the lasting evidence behind a verified planting and the reward paid for it, which is the whole point of the record.
- Server logs - a short rolling window kept by our hosting providers for security and debugging.
Keeping it safe
Traffic to and from the app is encrypted in transit, and access to stored submissions is limited to the people who need it to run verification. No service can promise perfect security, but if a breach affects you we will tell you and the relevant regulator as the law requires.
Camera and location permissions
The app asks for camera and location access because a submission is not verifiable without them. You can refuse, and everything except filming a planting will still work.
Children
The app is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has given us data, write to us and we will remove it.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you can ask us for a copy of the data we hold about you, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, object to or restrict how we use it, ask for it in a portable form, and withdraw a permission you previously gave. Ask at jimi@wemakeimpact.org and we will respond within the time the law allows. Two honest limits: what has already been written to a public blockchain cannot be unwritten by anyone, including us, and we may keep the minimum needed to show that a reward was properly paid. If you are in the EU, the UK or a similar jurisdiction you also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority. If you are a California resident: we do not sell or share personal information, and exercising any of these rights will never get you worse treatment in the app.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes we update the date at the top of this page, and we will say so in the app when the change is a significant one.
